All Entries / Miguel Depends on Public Transit to Get Around the City

I take the Florida Transit because of my economic situation and because I feel that the automobile is the cause of many economic and environmental problems in the city of Miami. I volunteer at the local PBS station WLRN and it is easily accessible by public transportation. I take the 24 bus to Coral Gables and from there I take the Coral Gables Trolley which quickly takes me to the Douglas Road Metro Rail which cuts through all the traffic in the city to get me downtown very quickly and from there I take the Metro Mover to the Board of Education area which is the last stop on the Omni Loop of the Metro Mover and the station is right there. Ever since I started volunteering for the station great things have happened to me. I've met people who want to help me move up in the station and in my career

They've taken me under their wing and have helped me grow. I've particiated in several cultural events in the city and I owe it all to them for making me aware of the larger world out there and it all never would have happened if I had never had a public transportation system that made all that accessible to me. I also go to a beautiful book store in Coral Gables called Books and Books which has intorduced me to many gifted authors who have in turn introduced me to many different stories and subjects that I never would have known had there not been a system of public transportation that could take me there. Public transportation is the great equalizer.

It gives the least of us access to worlds that most of us would never see because of our lack of money. We need this valuable service and it needs to be greatly expanded. There is no reason why the Metro Rail of Miami could not rival the subway system of New York. All we need is the courage to make it happen. The money will follow.
